The Returning by Ann Tatlock
Reading this book reminded me how important things like font and page layout are to my enjoyment of a book. This was an advance copy of the book, which means the publisher has not made it pretty yet. The font was small and crowded, making it physically unpleasant to read. Fortunately, the content of the book was better than the presentation.
It is the story of a man’s return to his family after five yers in prison for involuntary manslaughter. Alcohol and automobiles don’t mix. The family struggled to hold their life together while the primary breadwinner was incarcerated. No one is quite sure how to behave once they are reunited.
Overall, The Returning is a good story. The characters have depth and dimension. The plot does not. I found myself rooting for this family, wanting them to pull their lives together. I wanted the father to learn from his mistake and be the man his family needed him to be.
